Kelly Bensimon has revealed why she called off her wedding to fiancé Scott Litner just four days before she was set to walk down the aisle.

The 56-year-old Real Housewives of New York alum — who previously said she wanted a ‘sexy’ and ‘unique’ wedding dress 

 called off her wedding because Litner refused to sign a prenuptial agreement, which she called ‘the ultimate red flag.’

‘I haven’t come this far in business and life to start making poor decisions because of a man,’ she told Us Weekly. 

‘He of all people should have understood the need to protect each other before we tied the knot.

 I’m truly shocked he refused a prenup.’

The reality star has a reported net worth of $10million. 

Bensimon said that Litner, who is a wealth advisor, ‘thought that I would enter this union without legal protections in place, that I would leave everything to faith.’

In a separate statement, she told the outlet: ‘Kelly is disappointed by this turn of events. ‘She was looking forward to an exciting new chapter in her life together with Scott when everything became clear to her late on Tuesday afternoon.’ Bensimon originally announced that she was calling off her wedding in a statement shared with Page Six on Tuesday.

‘I have decided that my two daughters are my priority and I won’t be moving forward with this wedding,’ the note said. A source close to Kelly told People that she is now taking time to focus on herself.

The reality television personality and financier had been preparing for a June 29 ceremony. 

Kelly and Scott were supposed to have two ceremonies — a backyard wedding in Boston for their closest loved ones and later a larger party in the Hamptons.

The couple got engaged last summer over Fourth of July weekend, when the financier popped the question on a trip to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where the reality television personality vacationed as a child.

A rep for the star told Page Six at the time: ‘Kelly is happily engaged and looking forward to this new beginning.’

Bensimon was previously married to Gilles Bensimon, a photographer, from 1997 to 2006 and they share daughters Sea, 26, and Teddy, 24 in July.

Litner has been married twice and also has children.

Scott proposed on a speedboat while she was clad in a tiny lilac bikini, catching her completely off guard.

‘Scott proposed to me, literally in Wisconsin near where I was raised. I was raised in Rockford, Illinois, and he proposed to me in Lake Geneva Wisconsin,’ she explained to DailyMail.com.

Last December the real estate agent told People about her then-fiancé: ‘When I first met him, I didn’t even say anything. I was speechless — which is not like me, I always have something to say.’

She gushed, ‘He blew me away. He’s just a really special human.’

According to Page Six, Kelly was scheduled to pick up her three wedding dresses from Kleinfeld’s on Tuesday afternoon.

Earlier this month, she shared with the outlet: ‘I’m getting married later in life and I never thought this would happen. I just would not change this day and the leading up to it.’

And she recently returned from a mini bachelorette trip at Sandals Dunn’s River in Jamaica with her daughters.
